What is a Porsche 911 Targa?
The Porsche 911 Targa was something completely new: the first safety cabriolet in the world with a fixed safety or roll bar. Porsche introduced the 911 Targa in September 1965 as part of the International Motor Show in Frankfurt.
Drivers looking to enjoy the open air can surely appreciate the 911 Targa, which features a removable folding roof and a fold-down plastic rear window that can be configured to fully open, partially open or closed.
Where did the Targa Name Come From?
The 911 Targa was a new concept in which Porsche integrated increased safety requirements for open-top cars in the America market. Porsche looked to race tracks where it had been successful, which led them to Targa Florio, which is a road race in Sicily.
The term “Targa” is Italian, meaning “number plate”, though legend has it that this was revealed when the copywriters were working on the sales brochure. After applying for a patent for the Targa in 1965, Porsche successfully introduced the Targa as a supplement to the Coupe for the 911, 911 S and 912 the following year.
Within the first three 911 generations, Porsche built a total of 87,663 Targa models.
Porsche 911 Targa in the Modern Era
Fast forward to 2011, Porsche introduced the seventh 911 generation, which was also fully redesigned. The 911 Targa was presented in January 2014, detailed as a modern classic with its innovative Targa roof.
Similar to its origin model, the modern Targa had the characteristic wide bar in place of B-pillars, a moving roof section about the front seats, and a wrap-around rear window without a C-pillar. Where the modern Targa varied, and some may say upgraded, was the ability to open and close the roof at the push of a button.
